Virginia Sports Park and Training Center at Goochland (VSP) was incorporated in October 2022 as a nonprofit entity by Tom Winfree. Mr. Winfree currently serves as Goochland County Board of Supervisor for District 3. VSP's stated goal is to establish a clay shooting park and archery center in Goochland County.

As of April 2026, VSP is currently seeking to establish their sports park on an 125-acre parcel of land leased from Luck Stone on the 4500 block of Old Fredericksburg Road behind Midpoint Industrial Center and situated just east of Walton Road.*

VSP's current concept plan shows 23 shooting stations, including a skeet stand, a wobble stand, a five-stand, and 20 stations on their clay shooting course(s). However, their pre-application filed in April 2026 requests the ability to construct up to 50 shooting stations.

Clay shooting is likened to the "golf of shooting sports" particularly in regard to its social aspect. Groups or squads of shooters traverse the course, similarly to golf, and take turns shooting at clays thrown into the air by mechanical traps. A standard round averages either 50 or 100 targets per person, and assuming the shooters only dispel one shot per clay, a group of five shooters would easily dispel 250 to 500 shots in the 60-90 minutes spent on the course.

A range with up to 50 shooting stations on its course(s), even if only half the stations were active, would incur daily traffic of 25-125* shooters on-site, firing simultaneously and successively on heavily attended days such as weekends, fun shoots, or tournaments. (*25 stations times squads of four or five people)

 

VSP is requesting daily operational hours, excepting a few holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, from morning to dusk, and states a capacity of 85-125 people. Note that capacity is simply a snapshot of a given point in time, not a cap on total attendance for the day, which could be higher.

*In October 2025, VSP's original application sought to build their range on an 85-acre parcel of land leased from Luck Stone, zoned A-1, on the 4600 block of Walton Road across from Ange Road. Its northwesternmost proposed shooting station was only 400ft from a shared property line and 600ft away from an existing family home; had seven homes within a quarter mile, 35 homes within half a mile, 120 homes within a mile, and over 500 homes within two miles.
